when I accept myself just as I am,
then I can change.”

Kathy Muzik Coaching, LLC · New Path Perspective Blog: Returning, But Not Going Back

It feels strange to sit down and write again after eight months of not posting. Part of me expected it to feel familiar, like returning to a room I had simply stepped out of for a while. But I’m realizing that I’m not walking back into this space as the same person who left it. A lot can change in eight months. We let go of some things and grow into others. So while I am returning to this blog, I’m not really going back. I’ve just become the person I am now.
The more I consider it, the more I realize that eight months is only one marker in my story. I’m not the same person I was a year ago, or two years ago, either. None of us are. We are always being shaped by what we experience, what we learn, what we question, and what we begin to understand differently. Some changes are obvious. Others happen so subtly that we don’t recognize them until we look back and realize there is distance between who we were then and who we are now.

Sometimes that distance shows up in unexpected ways. Something that once felt important no longer carries the same weight. A goal we were certain we wanted begins to feel less compelling. A role, routine, or way of thinking that once fit comfortably starts to feel restrictive. We may find ourselves drawn toward different questions, different priorities, or simply a different pace. The distance doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful. Often, the clearest sign that we have changed is that what once fit us no longer does.

And yet, when something no longer fits, our first instinct is often to force ourselves back to where we were. We tell ourselves we need to get back on track, back into a routine, back to feeling motivated, back to a prior version of ourselves. But what if going back isn’t actually the answer? What if the discomfort we’re feeling isn’t a sign that we’ve lost our way, but an invitation to notice that the path itself may need to change?

Perhaps the more compelling question isn’t, “How do I get back to who I was?” but, “What fits the person I am now?” That question asks something different of us. It asks us to pause long enough to notice what has changed instead of immediately trying to fix it. It asks us to become curious about what we still want, what we may have outgrown, and what might be asking for our attention now.

That doesn’t mean dismissing or judging who we used to be. The person we were then made choices based on what we knew, what we needed, and what we were ready to understand at the time. We can appreciate who we were without continuing to live by the same assumptions, priorities, or expectations. Growth doesn’t have to mean becoming someone entirely new. Sometimes it simply means allowing ourselves to become more fully who we are now.

That is what this return feels like for me. I’m not coming back to recreate what this space was eight months ago or to write from the same perspective I had then. I’m coming back with different questions, different experiences, and a deeper awareness of what matters to me now. I want this space to reflect the person I am becoming, not simply the person I have been.

Maybe that’s the invitation for all of us: to stop measuring ourselves against who we used to be and to become curious about who we are now. To notice what still fits, what no longer does, and what may be asking to emerge next. Returning doesn’t have to mean going back. Sometimes it means meeting ourselves where we are, honoring the distance we have traveled, and moving forward from here.
