[1.5 Minute Read or Listen Below] I never used to read fiction books. I thought I was wasting time if I wasn't reading to learn. But I changed my tune.
As I came to appreciate the importance of breaks to boost my productivity, I also recognized the need for general downtime and relaxation, and fiction has become an essential part of that time.
I love to learn, so reading non-fiction fed my desire to learn and acquire knowledge constantly. However, this approach also led to information overload and mental fatigue. As much as we act like it sometimes, we are not robots. Downtime is perfectly acceptable and necessary for our overall well-being. I used to dislike the term "self-care." It sounded like code for self-indulgent. But when I re-started my yoga practice in 2021, my new yoga instructor talked about the word Ahimsa, or non-harm. She explained that genuinely caring for yourself through physical and mental health is not selfish. Fiction is now part of my self-care. It provides an escape and allows for mental rejuvenation. Stories can offer valuable insights into human nature, emotions, and relationships, contributing to personal growth and creative thinking. It also allows us to connect with our emotions and imagination. And fiction is more than entertainment. It can foster empathy and understanding of different perspectives, enhancing interpersonal skills. So, I've struck a balance between fiction and non-fiction reading, just as I've embraced taking periodic breaks throughout the day to optimize my productivity. Intentional downtime is acceptable and essential for maintaining mental health and creativity, and for me, consuming fiction is a valuable way to embrace this state of relaxation.
